New Plantation Shuttle To Start September 1
For Immediate Release, August 2008

Daily Service A First to Ashley River Road Plantations

A new daily shuttle service from downtown Charleston to the three Ashley River Road plantations will begin on Labor Day. The Charleston Chauffeur Company will provide a once-daily pick-up of passengers at 9:00am at the bus shed at the Charleston Visitor Center at 375 Meeting Street. The air-conditioned 14-seat van will deliver passengers to the first stop on the route, Drayton Hall, by 9:30am and will proceed to Magnolia Plantation & Gardens and Middleton Place, located just minutes apart from each other on Highway 61. The continuing, morning-long loop among the three sites will enable passengers to customize their own plantation tour – beginning and ending at their choice of sites. Shuttle tickets are $15 round-trip per person. Reservations are required through (843) 737-0654, but walk-ups may be accommodated, space permitting. Return service to downtown Charleston will begin at 2:00pm.

The three plantations on the shuttle route – Drayton Hall, Magnolia, and Middleton Place – all offer a variety of programs and activities that are under an hour in duration, including house tours, nature walks, special presentations, and other experiences that are unique to each site. Visitors will be able to choose what appeals to their particular areas of interest, create their own itinerary, and divide their time among one, two, or all three.

Representing the Ashley River Road plantations, Drayton Hall’s director of marketing, Vera Ford, is optimistic about the inaugural service. “We have wanted to make daily transportation to this area a reality for many years – in fact, the Charleston Visitor Bureau and area hotels and tour companies have encouraged it and enthusiastically supported our efforts. It took the right company, Charleston Chauffeur, to make it happen. We are especially grateful to them for stepping up and helping us work out what at first seemed like insurmountable logistics.” With time, Ms. Ford noted, the shuttle service may be extended to transport visitors from downtown Summerville.

Charleston Chauffer Company owners Joey and Patrick McQueeney, locals to the Charleston area, are proud to be the first to provide convenient daily transportation to all three of the Ashley River Road plantations. “We’ve always taken pride in training each of our drivers on their knowledge of the Charleston area,” says Joey. “Now, we’re extremely excited to partner with the plantations so that more visitors to Charleston will have an opportunity to discover their beauty and history.”
