Kiawah Island Achieves Community Habitat Certification
For Immediate Release, September 2008
The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) has announced that all of Kiawah Island met the necessary qualifications to become a certified Community Wildlife Habitat. Kiawah Island is now one of only three certified habitats in South Carolina and only 29 in the country.
The Kiawah Island Community Association (KICA) spearheaded this effort with expertise from KICA Director of Land Management Dave Achey and various entities on- and off-island, including the South Carolina Wildlife Federation, the Kiawah Island Garden Club, the Kiawah Island Natural Habitat Conservancy, the Kiawah Island Naturalist Group, the Kiawah Island Golf Resort, the Town of Kiawah Island Environmental Committee, the Kiawah Island Architectural Review Board and the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration.
The Kiawah Island community as a whole was involved in this process as well. In all, over 300 dedicated individuals volunteered to support the effort.
Several community projects, including plant rescues from lots to be developed, the Kiawah Island Turtle Patrol program and a bobcat GPS tracking project, also contributed to the receipt of this honor, as well as habitat certifications of 16 parks and preserves, one golf course and 58 homes.
"Never before has a national conservation organization like the NWF recognized that Kiawah Island is a very special place that cares deeply about the natural environment and sets a good standard for wildlife preservation and habitat conservation," states KICA Chief Operating Officer Joe Bunting. "Kiawah Island is honored to receive this certification and hopes that this will inspire other communities and individuals in the state and country to contribute to this worthy cause."
The NWF is the United States' largest private, non-profit conservation education and advocacy organization, with over five million members and supporters in 48 state-affiliated organizations. In addition to communities obtaining recognition as wildlife habitats through the NWF, individuals can also have their properties certified.
