Celebrate National Park(ing) Day In Charleston's City Market
For Immediate Release, September 2008
Trust for Public Land to Create Several Temporary Mini-Parks September 19th.
Dog owners, local produce enthusiasts, music lovers and anyone that enjoys a visit to the park are invited to celebrate National Park(ing) Day in Charleston on September 19th. The annual event celebrates urban parks and promotes the need for more parks by converting public parking spots into temporary parks for a day—a ‘reimagining’ of a public space. The Trust for Public Land (TPL), a nonprofit land conservation organization, is sponsoring this national event.
TPL and DesignWorks have designed “park(ing) spaces”, which will be located at the corner of Church and Market Streets (across from Anson Restaurant) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. This year’s event will consist of several different mini-parks, including:
- Farmer's Market Park sponsored by Stono Market
- Mini-Dog Park sponsored by Alpha Dog Omega Cat and Carolina Fresh Farms
- Music-in-the-Park with local musicians sponsored by Down to Earth and Carolina Fresh Farms
- Ping-Pong Park and a “Green Car” park sponsored by Import and Vintage Repairs
This event has been supported by numerous sponsors, including: the City of Charleston DesignWorks, I'on Group, Stono Market, Carolina Fresh Farms, Down to Earth, Alpha Dog Omega Cat, and Import and Vintage Repairs.
Volunteers are still needed for set-up (8-10 a.m.) and break down (3-4:30 p.m.). Contact Lauren Gellatly at The Trust for Public Land at lauren.gellatly@tpl.org
National Park(ing) Day has grown from one metered parking space in San Francisco in 2005 to over 60 participating cities this year. Spartanburg will join Charleston in celebrating National Park(ing) Day in South Carolina. “Across America, cities are renewing their investments in parks because our civic leaders have come to recognize that close-to-home parks, gardens, and playgrounds are essential if we are to have cities that aren't just livable, but lovable,” said Will Rogers, president of The Trust for Public Land (TPL).
Photos and videos from previous years’ events, as well as a full list of cities and details, are available online at tpl.org/parkingday.
National Park(ing) Day 2008 is a concept created by San Francisco art collective Rebar in 2005 to re-imagine the potential of the metered parking space. In 2006, in collaboration with TPL, REBAR founded “Park(ing) Day:” a global exploration of the creative potential of streets.
